Project Profile: Empowering Maize Farmers in Lira, North Uganda

This project, supported by the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy’s funding to Queen’s University, focuses on empowering maize farmers in Lira, North Uganda, through enhanced agricultural practices and business skills. By collaborating with local partners, the initiative aims to equip farmers with knowledge in market dynamics, marketing strategies, and essential business management to improve their decision-making, profitability, and competitiveness.

The project promotes the use of modern farming techniques, introducing farmers to improved production methods and new technologies. This not only boosts the efficiency of maize cultivation but also enables the production of high-quality maize by-products, such as flour and oil, contributing to affordable and locally sourced food products.

Our approach includes hands-on training, field demonstrations, and collaborative workshops designed to ensure farmers receive practical, actionable guidance. Through these efforts, we aim to reduce the region’s reliance on imports, strengthen the domestic market, and enhance food security. Ultimately, the project aspires to create sustainable agricultural growth, increase incomes for farmers, and contribute to the broader economic development of Lira and its surrounding communities.
